Blake Proud has been a mad innie fan right from the start and turns out he is doing some cool sh!t himself. We had a chat with Blake and he gave some advice on starting a clothing label, his favourite sneakers and using innies to hang clothes… wtf!
Where do you live and what are the 3 best things about it?
Perth City.. The Sun, The Beach and the girls. Ain’t no other city in Australia comes close.
Do you have a party trick and what is it?
Im like a black out bandit. I get buck wild, don’t remember a thing and then have to listen to all the rumours for the next week.
You started the fashion label Toys Collective, tell us a bit about it?
Me and my best friend Josh started Toys Collective back in 2011. We grew up together working at surf shops and thought it was time for us to do our own thing. We always chased the freshest designs and working in retail we always got a hold of product before anyone else did. Knowing we had it first made us feel pretty dope – so we tried to incorporate that feeling with Toys Collective by doing limited edition runs normally between 50 or 100 prints.
The name Toys.. We wanted to come up with a name that everyone in the world can relate to and the one thing we all do is work to pay for our Toys. No matter what it is when you’re grinding away 9-5, all thats on you’re mind is that next wave, that next skate, that next ride… what ever your things is. Work Hard Play Hard is what Toys Collective is all about.
What’s a highlight moment for Toys Collective?
Every time I see someone in the streets repping our gear I get goose bumps. I don’t think any of our fans and customers understand how much their support means to us. It’s truly a humbling experience and is a highlight every time – it never gets old.
Have you used that you own a label as a pick up line and has it worked?
ahaha nah that’s not my style, although you do get a few people approach you and ask if you’re the man behind the label.
Advice for those thinking of starting a label?
Quality over quantity. There isn’t anything else you need to know other than that. This game is competitive now and everybody is starting to cut corners to save money or make a quick buck. Don’t be that guy.
What’s next for Toys Collective?
We have a bright future and we are really looking at branching out in to more retail this year, and possibly getting on board with an agency or retail group. We are one brand to watch over the coming years and we expect to be right up there with the best of them!
What did you want to be growing up?
I wanted to be an NBA Superstar, for real. Ended up playing in LA in 2012 for a bit but nothing major.
What are your fav shoes to wear innies with?
Man there ain’t no kicks as fresh as Supra! I met the Director in Las Vegas back in 2012 at M.A.G.I.C – man they have come a long way even since then. (non-related point) I actually ran out of pegs the other day and managed to use an Innie to hold a Toys Collective shirt on the line – thats a colab right?!
How can everyone spam you?
Haha, love chatting with new crew and hookups so spam away!
